Usually I’m all about discovering the next hole in the wall, ancient noodle shop, but hey, I grew up in Canada after all, and there will come a moment in time where there is such thing as “too many noodles”! So when Flaming Frango reached out to see if I would be interested to try their new menu, I was curious and took them up on their offer.
I had tried Flaming Frango once before, about 1 year ago, but like most Hongkees, I ate there, thought it was decent enough, but then moved on to other new and IT restaurants screaming my name for me to try and never got around going to it again. After my return visit, I’ve realized that Flaming Frango is the perfect restaurant for quick meals and for those on lean protein diets. I used to do a lot of Chicken on the Run and Healthy Chicken for dinner, but honestly, Flaming Frango is on a whole new level – they’ve definitely improved things since my last visit.
Let’s get started on what we tried, and what our absolute faves.
We started out with drinks: The Lychee and Lemongrass Colada ($85) and Portuguese Red Sangria ($78) – We both preferred the Sangria which was super refreshing and yummy. Oops, we drank these too fast…
One of the main reasons why I prefer Flaming Frango to other chicken joints is because of their homemade spicy sauces! The green one is the mint and coriander with a slight kick (mild), the red one is the hot, and the small red bottle is the flamin’ hot. I like to mix all three together (go me).
PIRI PIRI PRAWNS ($138)
First off, the Piri Piri Prawns, which in our opinion was one of the main stand out dishes of the night. So fresh and so good. Who else likes to suck the juices out of the shrimp heads? Just me? Okay, moving on…
PORTOBELLO MUSHROOM STRIPS ($68)
Golden friend portobello mushroom strips served with pirioli, which is mayo with chillies. A good appy if you’re going for a vegetarian dish, but the dip is definitely not vegan. We preferred the Mediterranean Salad if you’re looking for the vegetarian option and did I mention we were still dreaming about the Piri Piri Prawns at this point…
MEDITERRANEAN SALAD ($98)
Assorted young leaves, tomatoes, cucumber, orange, halloumi cheese, red peppers and olives. The halloumi cheese was paired really well with the tart and sweetness of the orange. I thought this was such a good dish to cleanse the palate before the mains. I was responsible for consuming 80% of this salad. Yums.
1/4 CHICKEN LEG & THIGH ($88)
The winner of the night. The first time I came here, the chicken was okay, but I thought it could have been seasoned more; however, this visit, the chicken blew our minds. I’m a dark meat girl and the chicken was outstanding. It was super juicy and incredibly tender, not to mention, absolutely flavourful. We loved the small details as well – they also roasted the lemon and it was incredibly easy to rub the lemon juice onto the chicken. It was such an improvement and I can honestly say I much prefer it over Flames (former go-to lunch spot) in Quarry Bay and Chicken on the Run. Good stuff!
CHICKEN & MUSHROOM BURGER ($168)
Complemented with cheese and caramelized onions served with Piri Piri fries & coleslaw. The cheese was really nice paired with the chicken, which we recommend getting it spicy if you can stand the heat. The portobello mushroom served as the moist maker, giving it major juiciness, and the toasty warm bun completed the package. Now, between the 1/4 chicken and the burger? The chicken all the way – that was seriously so good and I’m not too big of a burger person to begin with. What am I though, is a serious fries fan, and the fries were so dang good. They were super hot and crispy on the outside, mushy and soft on the inside. I didn’t use the pirioli sauce, but preferred their homemade sauces instead.
HALLOUMI CHEESE FLAMING FAJITAS ($138)
We finished the night off with the fajitas, which came with an onion and pepper medley served with sour cream, guacamole and pico de gallo. The tortillas were still warm and stuffy when they arrived, and halloumi cheese was very tasty within the onion and pepper medley. It was good as a vegetarian alternative, but not a must-have at Flaming Frango.
DELIVERY & CATERING
I think the best thing about Flaming Frango is that not only is it a neat place for a quick nibble and a drink as it has a nice ambience; but it’s also great for a quick, healthy & reasonable priced dinner. They’re located on Staunton Street on the Mid-Levels, BUT they’re one of the participating restaurants for Food Panda, Deliveroo & UberEats so you can just get it delivered right to your doorstep. The type of food they do, with the mixture of appetizers and mains would also be good for junks, parties, or office events.
