CANTO SLANG: EPISODE 25
As I do research for these slangs, I’ve come to realize a lot of slangs involve airplanes and poultry… And this one is no exception!
WTF is that? Be very careful about this slang because it should not be confused with the other slang “hit airplane” because they mean two totally separate things and you could be at the cockpit of all jokes if you get them mixed up. The severity of the situation if you confuse the two slangs is that, “Hit Airplane” is NSFW or dinner conversation, but “Release Airplane” is.
RELEASE AIRPLANE ORIGINS:
The origin of this slang dates back to when HK planned its first plane (seaplane in this particular instance) aerobatics performance, which in Cantonese would directly translate to “Release Airplane”. As this was the first of its kind in HK, the whole city was very excited and pumped out to witness this plane spectacular. Unfortunately, the aerobatics performance was cancelled on the day of due to high winds and to the great disappointment of the people of HK. The event was postponed and once again, the people of HK were very eager and was in full anticipation of the event. Once again, unfortunately, on the day of the event, it was cancelled due to the pilot falling ill and the event was subsequently postponed again to a 3rd date. And this series of unfortunate events followed and it was cancelled a 3rd time due to technical difficulties as there were problems with the plane’s engine. This time, unlike the other times, the aerobatics performance was not rescheduled and instead, it was cancelled altogether as they were unable to fix the plane’s engine.
Now, you can imagine how disappointed HK must have been, and so that’s how the slang was created. If you “Release Airplane”, it means that you bailed/flaked out on something that you said you would do, but did not. Everybody has that one friend who “Releases Airplane” all the time – which one of your friends comes to mind?
