CANTO SLANG: EPISODE 13
After all that CNY excitement, this one is more of a common everyday slang.
WTF is that? Nope, not telling you to start cooking, don’t worry.
BOIL CONGEE ORIGINS:
This one is derived from the duration it takes to make congee traditionally. In order to understand this slang, one must understand that it takes a hell of a long time to make congee. You start with raw rice, and boil it down until it becomes a thickish liquid consistency without any obvious grains of rice present. Consequently, if you can finish boiling congee during the time you’ve been on the phone, it means, you’ve been gabbing for a very long time.
Nostalgia hits me when I think back to my high school days when SMS and Whatsapp didn’t exist. I would talk on the phone for hours and my mum would tell me that I didn’t just boil congee, I burnt congee =D
